  - brief history of cyanotype
 - how to

Cyanotype photography (if it's sunny outside)
Put the item you want to DIY on the sun print paper, then press them with the acrylic board, put it under the sun for 5-15minutes, and rinse the paper until the water becomes clear. Lay your printing paper flat and allow it to dry, after drying, your artistic work can be nicely presented.
Find interesting objects. Flowers, plants, leaves, keys, glasses, scissors and anything with a distinctive shape works well. Shield from sunlight. Try to keep the inner black bag inside the envelope when removing the paper to minimise any daylight affecting the unexposed paper. Keep it flat. Lay a piece of glass or perspex over plants and flowers, it will give you a sharper image. Handle with care. The paper is fragile when wet, handle carefully, holding it by the edges. Digital Negatives. You can create a negative using digital negative film printed on an inkjet printer. Expose as above. Time to weight. If your prints are curled after drying, they can be placed under a heavy object, such as a book, to flatten.
Take some alphabet photos.

Then create a 4-6 letter word using the photos
Go outside with tripod to take photos for Mini Planet . Continue working on mini planet.

Work on blog from last week on the assignment using the telephoto lens. Include the PDF in the post and tell what the difference was between each set of pictures and which lens you used for each. Then describe which lens works better for each photo.

Self Portrait using timer - Use TV Mode (Shutter Priority Mode) which allows you to set the shutter speed, leaving the camera to choose the aperture needed for correct exposure. Set the ISO to between 100 and 400. Use the timer set at 10 seconds so you can take the pictures of yourself.

Merge two photos together in Photoshop
-one of you taking the photo, and one of you as the focal point

Finish taking the shots for the Self Portrait assignment we started yesterday. Download them onto your computer and merge them into one photo using photoshop so it looks like you are taking a photo of yourself.
Field Trip to SDSU and Southeast Tech

NO SCHOOL Write a blog post titled "Self Portrait"
Describe how you set the camera to TV mode and what you set your f-stop at. Also tell how you set the timer on your camera so you could click the button and have enough time to get in the frame of the photo. Then explain what you did in photoshop to create the final picture. You do not have to include the technical settings because this is a combination of two photos and you already should have listed your mode, ISO, and f-stop in the blog post. Then add your finished merged photo (jpg) to your blog.

Next week
Macro Lens:
a lens suitable for taking photographs unusually close to the subject.

We will practice using the Macro lens taking photos in the light box and outside the light box.

Then we will write a blog showing your best photo inside the light box and your best photo outside the lightbox. Describe the process of taking the best macro photos.

When shooting in low light you can use manual focus, or use a flashlight for focusing and once the focus is set, turn autofocus off so it won’t change once the light is off. Keep ISO as low as possible and set your aperture according to the style of shot you want (if in doubt, start at about f/5.6).

Fill the Frame Assignment for the Week. Read the handout. Do not do the assignment on the handout. Instead, this is your assignment:

Go out on a photo walk. Look for interesting subjects and take photos (keep the “fill the frame” lesson in mind).  Spend a moment thinking about what you want to say “visually” about that subject, and don’t include anything more than what’s necessary to tell your story. Take at least 10 Fill the Frame photos. Your blog assignment this week should be named "Fill the Frame" and should contain your two favorite 2 photos that you took for this assignment, along with their technical information. You need to include a paragraph that describes in detail why a photographer would want to fill the frame and why it makes some photos better. (4-5 sentences) All of your Fill the Frame photos (10) must be saved in a folder called "Fill the Frame" in your folder in our class folder on the Share Drive.

Rule of Thirds - Improve Photography
Rule of Thirds Assignment - Use your creativity. Try to take a variety of photos using the left third, the right third, the middle third, the top third, the bottom third, and the four points of intersection. Landscape photos work well for this. If the sky is pretty, show the sky in the top 2/3 and the land the bottom 1/3 or the other way around if you are showcasing pretty land or water features. I have some simple examples that you could re-create in your photo scattered throughout this week's lesson plans. This assignment is due Friday before the end of the period on your blog.

Rule of Thirds Handout 1

Rule of Thirds Handout 2

Turn on your gridlines on your viewfinder: First go to the yellow wrench menu. Then go over to the fourth sub menu. Then select shooting info disp for display. And scroll down to the grid display scroll down to 3x3. And lastly hit menu again.
Photo of the Week blog must be named "Photo of the Week: Food" and contain the food photo you took, along with its technical information. You need to include a paragraph telling about the elements of photography that you used to make this a good photo (lighting, simplicity, rule of thirds, leading lines, shallow (narrow) depth of field, deep (wide) depth of field. What did you do to highlight the food in the photo to make it look its best.

Rule of Thirds
The Rule of Thirds blog assignment should be named "Rule of Thirds Assignment" and contain 1-2 photos that you took for this assignment, along with their technical information. You need to include a paragraph that describes in detail what the rule of thirds is and why it makes photos better. (4-5 sentences) All of your Rule of Thirds photos (10) must be saved in a folder called "Rule of Thirds" in your folder in our class folder on the Share Drive.

Module 1 - Lighting and Locations- Watch videos 1-4

We will watch the rest of them next week.

For the rest of the period, work on your photo assignment for the week or study for Friday's test over the Depth of Field handout from Monday.
You have all of this period today to work on the blog assignment below (due tomorrow by 3:20pm)

Then study for the test which will be at the beginning of class tomorrow. The test will be about this handout - Depth of Field Assignment

DEPTH OF FIELD ASSIGNMENT 1:
Set up a shot so that you have a subject in the foreground (close to you) and in the background (farther back). It can be two objects, two people or even one object or person that has a part of them/it closer to the camera and part farther back in space (for example, a person holding their hands out towards the camera to frame their face). Just make sure that you can see both the foreground and background subjects at the same time. You will take 3 photographs of your subjects.
SHOT 1:
Use a small aperture (large f-stop #) to create a large depth of field. BOTH of your subjects should be in focus. SHOT 2: Use a large aperture (small f-stop #) to create a shallow depth of field. Use manual focus so that ONLY the subject in the FOREGROUND is in focus. The background subject should be blurry. SHOT 3: Use a large aperture (small f-stop #) to create a shallow depth of field. Use manual focus so that ONLY the subject in the BACKGROUND is in focus. The foreground subject should be blurry.
DEPTH OF FIELD ASSIGNMENT 2: For your second assignment, you will take a variety of creative photographs using shallow depth of field. You will need to use Av Mode on your camera and adjust your f-stop, ISO, distance and focal length for each shot. Get as many shots as you can with a variety of subjects- people, objects, plants, etc. Incorporate what you know about composition- use the shallow depth of field to create SIMPLICITY, and try to use rule of thirds, point of view, leading lines and framing wherever possible. (Originally I told you to take 3 Shallow and 3 Wide, but you only need to do 3 shallow.)

By the end of class on Friday, create a blog post called "Depth of Field Using AV & Manual Mode". Add your three photos for Assignment 1 and label the photos Shot 1, Shot 2, and Shot 3 following the descriptions above. Also label the technical information. You do not have to post the 3 photos you took for assignment 2.
Test over Depth of Field

Blog assignment for the week is due by 3:30 today.

– Take two photographs of the same subject, trying to get two different depth of fields. Remember to first set WB to auto and ISO to 100.  You will set the camera mode to AV (aperture priority mode). Make sure to focus on the same subject for both shots you take.

-In Photo #1 You will get a shallow depth of field. Zoom out to the longest focal length of the lens which is 55mm. Set the aperture on f5.6 (the widest aperture at 55mm) and take note of what the camera sets the shutter speed at. Get in good and close to your subject

-In Photo #2 You will get a wider depth of field. Put your lens at 18mm (which is the widest lens mm on your lens). Set your aperture at f16, and take note of what the camera sets the shutter speed at. Stay a bit further back to get a better depth of field.

Write up a blog post named Aperture Priority Mode. Explain that you changed the dial on top of your camera to AV (aperture Priority Mode). The first photo had a shallow depth of field that means that only what is close is in focus and the background is blurry. To make the background blurry, we moved our focal point farther away from the background and we moved the camera in close. We also used a large aperture (small number on f-stop like f4 or f-5.6 means large aperture). The second photo had a wider depth of field because we changed the focal length of the lens to 18mm and used a smaller aperture of f16. Don't forget to put in your technical information for each picture.

NO CLASS - School let out at 1:45 due to no water Because a couple of you were gone Tuesday and a couple of you will be gone today, I have decided that today we will go outside and practice depth of field in the trees north of the nursing home - trying to capture some fall colors before they are gone. No assignment is due today - just practice. Don't forget if you were gone Tuesday to look at the lesson plans and get the assignment done by tomorrow because it is the end of the quarter. PERIOD 8: PHOTOGRAPHY 2:35-3:20 PM

Assignment #1 Take the camera home one night this week (Monday-Wednesday) an take at least 10 good quality pictures using manual mode with 100 or 200 ISO (unless it is dark outside and you are taking pictures outside, you might have to up the ISO), aperture as close to F4 as you can, and then keep changing the shutter speed to whatever takes a good picture, not too light or dark. You may take the pictures of whatever you want, people, pets, objects, scenery, inside or outside. For now try to get good composition of the photos, but that is not your main goal for this assignment. Write a post telling what you did in this assignment by changing the shutter speed to whatever speed allowed just the right amount of light to take a good picture. You could also talke about changing the ISO if you took pictures in the dark so the camera's light sensor was more sensitive to light. You will be graded on completion of the task, following directions of the assignment, your blog post, and taking properly exposed photos (not too light or dark). Name your blog post Correct Exposure- due Thursday

Assignment #2 -  you are to find two photos online- one which shows a deep (wide) (everything in focus)  depth of field and one which shows a shallow depth of field ( whatever is close is in focus). In the caption section where you usually post technical information, guess at what you think the aperture and shutter speed is. in the post below the pictures tell whether it's a shallow depth of field or a wide depth of field. Name this post Depth of Field Examples- due Thursday.

Assignment #3 - Read these links and write two paragraphs explaining in your own words what depth of field is in photography and the ways to control depth of field when shooting. Call this blogpost Depth of Field:

Monday - Chapter 1 Test

PERIOD 8: PHOTOGRAPHY 2:35-3:20 PM

Go to the internet and search for 3 good examples of leading lines in photography. You will need one of each:
1. a leading line of a physical object
2. A leading line that is composed of light and shadow or color contrast
3. A leading line that enters the shot anywhere other than the foreground.

Save them on your computer.
On your edublog, create a post titled Leading Lines and post the 3 examples. Write a paragraph description of what leading lines are in photography and why they are used. Explain how each picture demonstrates the use of leading lines.
This is due by the end of class Thursday.
Continue our work with Leading lines and you will sign out your camera for one night (Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday) to complete the Action assignment on your handout and post the assignment to the blog. There will also be a quiz/test sometime this week over the handouts on Leading Lines and the Master Manual Mode Training handout.

Homework Assignment:
Check out a camera one night (Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday). Take leading lines photos using the guidelines below. You will need at least one good shot of each of the 4 guidelines to put in a blog post.

1. Shoot a naturally found leading line of a physical object. Make sure that it leads to the subject and not past it (think of the Blizzard example and the Curvy Road example).
2. Find a leading line that leads nowhere. Then, insert your own chosen subject at the appropriate point along the leading line to achieve a great composition (think of the Trail into the Forest example and the Man in Forest example).
3. Use a leading line, or lines, to create a composition created by light and shadow (think of the Door example) or color.
4. Create a picture with a leading line that enters the shot anywhere other than the foreground (think of the Basketball example).

The blog post with pictures is due by the end of class on Friday.
Continue working on Monday and Tuesday's assignments.

Quiz/test over the handouts on Leading Lines and the Master Manual Mode Training handout will be sometime this week. To prepare for the quiz/test study these links and the Manual Mode worksheet.
Leading Lines
Leading Lines

EVERY PICTURE THAT YOU TAKE AND POST TO YOUR BLOG MUST CONTAIN the following technical information as a caption for each photo.
-Date and Time of Day Taken
 -Location
 -Camera Make and Model
-Camera Mode
-F-stop (Aperture)
-Exposure time (Shutter Speed)
-ISO
-Focal Length
Continue working on Monday and Tuesday's assignments.

Leading Lines blog post from Monday is due today by the end of class.

Here is a guide that might help you at home when you check out the camera for the night.

Assignment:

Sitting in your desk, take several photos of the same non-living object changing the settings as follows:

ISO 100

Aperture as close to F4 as you can get

Change Shutter Speed and take a photo at each of these settings:

1/400, 1/250, 1/100, 1/30, 1/15, and ¼.

Write a blog post titled "Experimenting With Shutter Speed" displaying the pictures with their technical information and explain what happens to the pictures as you change the shutter speed each time. Is the shutter speed getting faster or slower with each change? Is it letting in more light or less light with each change? Does the picture get lighter (possible overexposed-too light?) or darker (possibly underexposed-too dark?)

-Due by the end of class Friday.

Continue working on Tuesday's assignment. It is due by the end of class today.

Quiz/Test

Next Week:

Set your aperture at f16, and take note of what the camera sets the shutter speed at. Make sure it is not below 60th of a second, or open up the aperture to f11. Stay a bit further back to get a better depth of field.

-Repeat the depth of field activity 2-3 times to make sure you get it right.

– For the critique for this assignment you are to find two photos online- one which shows a good depth of field and one which shows a shallow depth of field. In the caption section when you post them guess at what you think the aperture, shutter speed and lens mm was for each photo.
