***You will be starting programming with the GameMaker software soon, so open it up at home and click on the button that says free version. It should tell you that it has been licensed successfully and that you need to restart GameMaker to activate your license. If that all works, you should be able to use it at school.***

Brainstorm with the computer applications class on an idea for designing a game. You will need to design an educational game for kids ages 8-12. Come up with a marketable character and create a PowerPoint presentation that will introduce your game to me. Your PPT should have a picture of your character and answer the following questions:

What genre?
What colors?
How expensive?
Character - boy, girl, animal, make believe?
How difficult--what levels?
Object of the game--how do you win?

Your PPT should also have a slide dedicated to listing the jobs and tasks necessary to build this game, such as programming, graphics, sound effects, voice over recordings (if needed), writing instructions, project manager, customer support, etc.

Submit your PPT to Blackboard Learn.

September 3-6, 2013

Tuesday–Read pages 1-11 in "GM Tutorial - Designing Games" (up to "Presence & Immersion") This tutorial does a great job of defining the components of a computer game and what designers should consider when they develop a game. This will serve as the foundation for our game design decisions for the rest of the course. Review "Designing Good Games PowerPoint" (slides 1-4) - providing highlights from "GM Tutorial - Designing Games". Think about your favorite games and how they follow these "good game" concepts. (Call of Duty, Madden's Football, Angry Birds, etc.) Play the same game you chose on Friday, August 30 from  http://www.addictinggames.com . While playing your game, print off and complete the "Game Critique Worksheet 1"  based on the "GM Tutorial - Designing Games" handout. Hand in worksheet to Mrs. Nightingale.

WednesdayContinue reading the rest of "GM Tutorial - Designing Games" (pages 11 to the end). Read through the rest of  "Designing Good Games PowerPoint" (starting with slide 5) to highlight the essential concepts of this portion of the tutorial. Play the same game that you critiqued yesterday and continue thinking about the concepts just covered. Print off and complete "Game Critique Worksheet 2" and hand in the worksheet  to Mrs. Nightingale.

ThursdayRead the "Lessons in Color Theory for Spyro the Dragon". Print off and complete the accompanying worksheet. Play the same game that you critiqued on Monday and Tuesday, print and complete "Color Theory Game Critique" based on color theory criteria. Hand in the worksheet to Mrs. Nightingale. Review for Monday's quiz on Unit 1.

FridayUnit 1 Quiz-See Mrs. Nightingale to get a copy of the quiz. Complete the quiz and hand it in to Mrs. Nightingale. Then reflect on the design/engineering cycle and how it applies to problem solving and game creation with "Gaming and the Engineering Design Cycle" PowerPoint and "Design Cycle in Class Exercise". After reading through them, post your thoughts on the topic to your Game:IT class Blog. You must write at least one paragraph with a minimum of 5 sentences.
