CET 720
Evaluating Educational Technology Outcomes
Instructor: Dr. Mark Hawkes
Course Description:
This course applied the processes of student assessment
and program evaluation to determine the outcomes of educational technology
application. Students assessed the relevance of a broad selection of evaluation
criteria and addressed how evaluation might be applied to determine both the
formative and summative outcomes of student learning through technology use.
Course Reflections
CET 720 proved to be
very helpful to me in my role on the Technology Committee at my school. We
had written up our technology plan and updated it every year, but weren't doing
a very good job of evaluating the outcomes. This course has given me food
for thought in contributing to the evaluation of our technology plan.
For our final project, we were put into teams of three
to create an evaluation plan. My school district was chosen because, at
the time, we did not have a full-time technology coordinator. This
assignment was completed in phases. The first
assignment was to identify the purpose and the audience for the evaluation, to
describe the evaluand, to develop our guiding evaluation questions, and to
describe the approach of the evaluation. For the second part of the assignment
we addressed our evaluation questions. For each question we determined the
rationale for the question, what information we were seeking, how we would
collect that information, and how we would analyze the information.
Finally, to complete our assignment, we described how
we would report the results of the evaluation. In
addition, we created several evaluation instruments, such as hardware
audits, software evaluation forms, and web site
evaluation forms.
