Type Words Three Times Each
This is the first time we are starting Word for the year. I demonstrate how to
start the program and get a blank piece of paper on the screen.
Next we discuss three keys that will be useful on the keyboard. The space bar,
return key, and delete key. I ask the students to tell me what they think each
key does and correct any misconceptions.
I demonstrate typing:
cat [space]
I explain that Word thinks we are typing a sentence, so it capitalizes the
letter C in cat. I point out that when we type in Word, we only press the space
bar one time.
I demonstrate typing:
cat cat [space]
I explain that since Word thinks we are typing a sentence, it puts a red
squiggly line under the second word cat. It's trying to tell us we made a
mistake. It's ok because we know we are typing a list of words and the red
squiggly lines will not print out.
I demonstrate typing:
cat cat cat
I ask what key the need to press to get the blinking line under the word cat. If
they say delete, I press delete to show them that it erases the letter t.
I demonstrate typing:
cat cat cat
bat bat bat
rat rat rat
I explain that they will choose two more words of their own to write three
times. I ask a few children to volunteer what word they might type.
I demonstrate typing:
cat cat cat
bat bat bat
rat rat rat
ghost ghost ghost
train train train
Mrs Oro
When they have typed five words three times and their name, they call me to the
computer using their red cup. I ask if they would like to print their paper. If
they say no thank you, I save the file. If they say yes please, I print and save
their work.
