Creating a Cover Page
Overview:
You will be creating a cover page that will include Your Name, Your Teacher's
Name, the Class Title, the Date, Period Number, an Image and a Page Border.
Items to learn:
Steps to Completing the Assignment:
- Open Microsoft Word
- Create a New Document
Click on the Office Button icon
and select New... > Select the
"Blank document" icon > click on the Create button
- Change your margins to 1.0" for the top.
bottom, left and right.
Click on the "Layout" tab > Margins > Select the
appropriate measurements.

- Set up the page so that all of the
information on your page will align horizontally in the center of it.
Select the "Home" tab > click on the
icon

- Turn on the Show/Hide tool
Click the
icon.
- Type in the Name of the Class (Computer
Applications). Press [Enter] two times and type the name of the person you
chose (in bold, size 16 font).
- Press [Enter] four times
- Type "Presented By:". Then [Enter] 1 time
- Type your name
- Press [Enter] four times
- Type "Presented To:". Then [Enter] 1 time
- Type your instructor's name (Mrs.
Nightingale)
- Press [Enter] two times
- Type your period number (Period 2)
- Press [Enter] two times
- Insert the Date
Position your cursor where you want the date.
Then, go to "Insert" tab > Date and Time > Select
the format you want > select the "Update
automatically" > OK

bottom, left and right.
Go back to the "Page Layout" tab > select the
appropriate option

- Change the Vertical Alignment to "Center"

> Layout >
Page...Vertical Alignment > Select Center > Apply To: Whole Document > OK

- Save your File in your directory. Name
the file "(Your Name) Cover Page"
Click on the
icon > select "Save As" locate the Share Drive
and open the Computer Applications Folder. Open the folder with your name
and create a new folder and name it Word. Name the document Cover-tb and
click Save

- Insert an "Art" type page border (if it
turns out that you don't have any "art" borders, just use a regular page
border)

Page Borders > select the style and color > apply to "Whole Document" > OK

- Print Preview your document
> Print > Print Preview > When finished viewing, Click "close Print Preview"
to return to the document

- Open Internet Explorer.
- Go to www.yahoo.com
- Search for an image of the person you
chose by typing in the name of the person in the Search box and then click
the search.
- Find an image that you like
and right-click on the image. Select "Save
Picture As...". Click on the Save in
List arrow and select the Share Drive and
find the Word folder that you created earlier in the Computer Applications
folder. Name the image the name of the person in the File
Name box. Click Save.

- Close Internet Explorer
- In your Word document, move your cursor between the title
"Computer Applications" and "Presented By".
- Insert the image you just saved
in your directory
Make sure that you have saved the image from the
Internet. Then go to the Insert Tab >
Picture > locate your directory where the image is saved and
double-click on the image file.

- Select the Title of the cover page and
change the font size to 24, change the color, change the font type, give it
an effect.
Select the text you want to change.
Then, go the Home tab > Click on the Font icon
/Make changes to the font
style, type,
color,
size, Special effects >
OK
- Save your work. Use the icon
up near the
,
do not go to File/Save As
Since you have already saved the document once, you do not have to Save
As... again. You only have to Save the changes you made by clicking on the
save icon.
- Take your page border off of the page:
Go to Page layout
tab > Page Borders > select the style and color >
Select None > OK

- Now go back and put a page border back on
the page, but make sure you choose Apply To: This Section -
First Page Only.
- Then select "Presented By" and make it
bold
Click on the "Home" tab > click the
icon
- Do the same for "Presented To:"
- Save your work
- Spell Check the document

"Review" tab > click the
icon and make
the necessary changes.

> Print > Print Preview > When finished viewing, Click "close Print Preview"
to return to the document
- Turn off the Show/Hide tool

on the "Home" tab

- Zoom out to 50%....
Click on the "View" tab > click on the zoom icon
and select 50%.
- Have your instructor
check your work.
Page 1: The Biography Page.
(You must use proper MLA format for any web site
and any quote that you include while researching this page).
- Open an Internet Browser and go to
http://google.com
- In the search box, type in the name of the
artist or athlete you are researching and click on "Search".
- Skim through the results to locate one
that suits your needs.
- Don't forget to gather the correct MLA
information because you will need to reference this later in your
bibliography. Make sure to enter that information Microsoft Word's Citation
feature that you learned in lesson 5.

Go to your Word document Cover Page and click after the date. Go to the Page
Layout tab and click the Breaks button and choose Next Page.
- change your margins to the following:
Top: 0.75" Bottom: 0.75 Right: 0.6" Left: 0.6" and click OK.
- Change the vertical alignment to Top by going to the Page Layout tab,
Page Setup, and clicking the Layout tab. Choose Top under Vertical
Alignment.
- Include an appropriate title horizontally
aligned in the center of the page (do not use Word art)
- Include a border, not a page border, at
the top of the page just underneath the title
- Use font size 12 for the body text - Arial
Font style
- What information to include in this
page:
- Paragraph #1: Give a brief
summary of the life and career highlights of the person(s) that you
chose. Within this paragraph, make sure that you have paraphrased
something and that you have inserted a citation at the end of that
paraphrasing.
- Paragraph #2: Locate a second
source about your person(s). Then, write about what you believe to be
that person(s)' biggest achievement while quoting something from that
article? Also, tell us why you think this is their biggest achievement?
Insert that source as a new citation. Make sure that the citation is
located at the end of the quote.
- Paragraph #3: What surprised
you the most about this person (something that you did not know about
them)?
- Paragraph #4: If you could,
would you want to be this person? Why or why not? Everyone has good
things and bad things happen to them. Discuss how the positive
and
negative things this person has been exposed to would be fun and not fun
for you. Basically, describe how you would have felt if faced with the
same situations as this person.
- Paragraph #5: Conclude with
what is the biggest thing about life that you have learned from this
person's life.
- Should include images of the artist or
athlete no larger than 1.5" x 1.5"
- Should be at least one full page. The
text needs to be one page in length NOT including the images. (Images can be
put on a separate page).
- Justify Align all of the text in the
biography. Do not include the Title of the page when doing this.
- Create a Drop Cap for the first letter of
the first word in the your biography. Set the Drop Cap to span 3 lines.
- At the end of the biography, insert a page
break.
- Go to Office Icon > Prepare > Properties >
Author: Type your full name
DO THIS LAST: Then you need to put ONLY this
page into two columns. To do this, Select all of the Biography text (do not
select any extra text lines on this page, the title of the biography or the
border at the top of the page.
Then put this text into two columns, make sure
the "Apply to" arrow says "Selected Text", then click OK.
Specific Requirements for the following
pages:
- Move your cursor to the next page of your
document and go to the Insert tab and click the header button. Click
the Link to Previous button to turn it off. (It should not be highlighted in
orange.)
- Header - Your name should be placed
on the left side of the header - Font size 8 -Close
Header.
- Click the Footer button-Click the
Link to Previous button to turn it off. (It should not be highlighted in
orange.) Place the Project name ("Microsoft Word Music Project") on the
left, the page number in the center and date on the right side of the footer
- Font Size 8
Next Page:
The Songs, Grammies, Academy Awards,
Athletic Awards Page (You
must use proper MLA format for any web site and any quote that you include while
researching this page. Look at this handout.).
See an Example
- Create a one column, 11 row table.
(Insert--> Table)
- Use an appropriate Heading for the
table. Center the title of the table in row 1.
- Select 10 songs, Movies, Athletic awards
and achievements from that individual and insert them into a table.
- Sort the column alphabetically
- Align the contents of the cells in the
center both vertically and horizontally
- Use shading (Make sure it is a light color
so that the text is easy to read)
- Change the border widths, style and color
for the table
- Two spaces below the table or on a
separate page, center the title of your favorite song, list of movies, or
list of participating athletic events. Do not include this in your table.
- If you are writing your project on a
musical artist, then below the title, insert the lyrics to the song.
- If you are writing your project on an
Actor, then list the awards they have been nominated for and also won.
- If you are writing your project on an
athlete, then list the schools and teams with which that person has played
beginning with High School.
